Les Aventures de Robert Macaire
As a teenager, Epstein had loved the books about Arsène Lupin and Fantômas, and he paid cinematic tribute to them with this epic about the adventures of the gentleman thief Robert Macaire, which begins with him and his assistant rescuing a young girl who has fallen from her horse. Epstein's film is similar in length to a silent film serial, but its five chapters tell a continuous story with a time jump in the middle, rather than self-contained adventures. (C.H.)
