Léontine & Lea
Between 1910 and 1912, the character of Léontine Penouillard appeared as a mischievous tomboy in around 24 short films. The identity of the actress behind this role remains an unsolved mystery in cinema history to this day – what we do know is that the films were hugely popular not only in her home country of France (where she was nicknamed Titine) but also in England and the USA: a fearless anarchist who knows no fear and will stop at nothing to get her way. Her Italian counterpart is Lea Giunchi, who, as was often the case, came to cinema via the circus and, in the 1910s, starred in a series of comedies named after her as well as excelling in serious roles, until her traces were also lost.
