Leo the Last

FromJohn Boorman

WithMarcello Mastroianni, Billie Whitelaw, Calvin Lockhart, Graham Crowden

Year1970

Duration104min.

Leo (Marcello Mastroianni) is heir to the throne of a European country that has been transformed into a republic. He returns to London to the splendid family mansion in the middle of the poor district of Notting Hill. While royalists, led by his butler Laszlo (Vladek Sheybal), prepare to take up arms against the republic, Leo observes his neighbors, a black family, with increasing interest, because he does not feel comfortable in the circle of his supposed allies: Laszlo is a fanatic, Leo's would-be girlfriend Margaret (Billie Whitelaw) craves his fortune and his new-age doctor sucks money out of his pocket with absurd treatments. Carried by tender irony, Boorman makes fun of the aristocratic melancholic, who in the end realizes that he may not have changed the world, but at least he has changed his street. (E.S.)
