L’eclisse (LIEBE 1962)
A breakup in the early morning, a aimless wandering through Rome's new urban landscapes – and a love that barely has time to take shape before it dissipates: Freshly single, Vittoria begins an affair with the young broker Piero, who, however, is incapable of showing genuine emotion. But who is, in Antonioni's world of concrete and stock market prices? As in his two previous films with Monica Vitti, he depicts failure, disappearance, and what perhaps remains. The film's final minutes are famous: places without characters, time without events – alienation is palpable in the age of capitalism, where words and glances no longer reach each other. Celebrated as modern in 1962, it remains so today – one might add: more than ever.
