In her five LIFELINES, Käthe Kratz - herself a driving force behind the women's movement - tells the story of four generations of women fighting for their rights. Marlene, a law student, works part-time as a pianist at events organised by wealthy societies. When she meets a group of students who disdain bourgeois culture, she quickly immerses herself in the '68 movement. Their protests in front of the university building were clearly directed against the Vietnam War, oppression and property. But it soon becomes clear that just talking about freedom does not necessarily bring equality within the group. Kratz takes a sometimes critical look at a male-dominated movement in which most comrades tended to put gender equality on the back burner.
