Le Prix du danger
The television programme ‘The Price of Danger’ is the ratings hit of the future (and helps those in power to pacify the discontented population): a volunteer candidate is hunted down by killers in front of the cameras – if he survives, he gets a million. Robert Sheckley's visionary short story was remarkably adapted for German television as Das Millionenspiel (The Million Game), and the cinema version by the committed French thriller specialist Yves Boisset increases the satirical sharpness even further. The more vulgar, the more apt (in every respect): Michel Piccoli's brilliant performance as the jovial showmaster of the cynical programme sets a deeply dark tone in the comedy register, which is continued in the grim picture of a society of spectacle gone off the rails. Thrilling action sequences set against brutalist Yugoslav architecture add the finishing touches to this dystopian spectacle. (C.H.)
