Countess Laure Maresco (Nathalie Lissenko) falls in love with a gambler, with tragic consequences: suicide threats, loss (and recovery) of a fortune, and further scandals... Epstein's third film for the Albatros production company is tailored entirely to its leading actress. The expressive Lissenko plays both mother and grieving wife – a tall, tragic aristocratic figure, surrounded by men (Camille Bardou, Pierre Batcheff, Jean Angelo) who dance to the rhythm of her outbursts. Le Double amour is a film about a world dominated by pretence and extravagance, gambling addiction and elegance. The camera work is particularly precise, and the lighting in the outdoor scenes (mostly shot in Cannes) and the montage effects anticipate Epstein's future poetic work. The film was praised by critics for its ‘personal vision’ and ‘skilled technique’. (E.C.)
