Le concours (The Competition)

Every year, hundreds of students apply for admission to the famous French film school La Fémis. In the end, it is a handful of students who manage to convince the jury of their talent after several rounds of examinations and interviews and secure one of the coveted study places. Claire Simon accompanies an admissions round at the training centre where she herself taught a few years previously. She not only observes how the budding filmmakers present themselves in the examination rounds, but also the jury members, who come from all areas of the film industry, and their assessment criteria and interview methods. The portrait of a rigid competition system with relentless rituals makes it clear that the selectors cannot escape their prejudices and projections despite their best efforts. (Andrea Pollach)
