L’arte di arrangiarsi (Die Kunst, sich zu arrangieren)

FromLuigi Zampa

WithAlberto Sordi, Marco Guglielmi, Franco Coop, Luisa Della Noce, Franco Iamonte

Year1954

Duration85min.

Four decades of spinelessness in fast-forward, captivatingly presented by the great Alberto Sordi: Rosario Scimoni, known as Sasa, quits his job as secretary to his conservative mayor uncle in Catania, Sicily, in 1910 when he falls in love with an ardent socialist - and immediately starts plotting against his rival. After the First World War (unfit for service as a malingerer), Sasa ends up with the Fascists, towards the end of the Second he joins the Communists and soon the Christian Democrats. After Anni difficili and Anni facili, this is the conclusion of a loose trilogy of sarcastic satires by Luigi Zampa and author Vitaliano Brancati (who died during filming): Behind Sordi's bubbly surface and versatility - from fraudulent producer of religious films to razor blade salesman in traditional costume and Tyrolean hat - lies the uniform horror of opportunism in all its hopeless mediocrity.
