"He is called Léon la lune because he is all alone in the world. Léon la lune is like you and me or someone else, a figure of life," writes Jacques Prévert in the opening titles of Alain Jessua's debut film. Although the poetic yet depressing portrait of a day in the life of the homeless man of the film's title was awarded the prestigious Prix Jean Vigo, he was only able to realise his feature film debut La vie à l'envers eight years later: Jacques Valin, a brother in the spirit of Léon la lune, works carefree in a property agency. One day, he proposes to his girlfriend Viviane - whereupon he suddenly and insidiously withdraws into an inner world. With immeasurable sensitivity in her characterisation and ambiguous staging, Jessua tells of the fine line between illness and liberation. (G.V.)
