La salsa vive (La Salsa Lives)
New York and Cali — two cities deeply connected through music history. In the 1960s, salsa was born on the streets of New York through the influence of Latin American migrants and Caribbean rhythms such as mambo, son, and cha-cha-cha, blended with elements of jazz. In Colombia, salsa took root particularly in Cali, where it continues to evolve to this day. This insightful and electrifying music documentary builds a bridge between the United States and Colombia, spanning several decades. Salsa icons from the genre’s golden era — including Rubén Blades, Henry Fiol, and Willie Rosario — bring the past to life through their stories. Colombian music legends such as Jairo Varela (Grupo Niche) and Francia Elena, as well as record collectors, dance school owners, and dancers, offer vivid insights into salsa culture then and now.
With numerous concert recordings and rich archival footage, Colombian director Juan Carvajal demonstrates how music and dance unite people — and reveals how deeply “Salsa Caleña” continues to shape the identity of Cali and its people today.
“A testament to Cali’s cultural heritage and the enduring spirit of salsa music.” (Latino Film Festival New York)
