La romana (Die freudlose Straße)
Rome under Fascism: young Adriana (Gina Lollobrigida) lives in humble circumstances and dreams of love, while her mother (Pina Piovani), who has been cheated out of her youth, urges her to climb the social ladder. After a scheming seduction by the fascist functionary Astarita (Raymond Pellegrin) and her disappointed love for Gino (Franco Fabrizi), Adriana turns to prostitution. When she meets the anti-fascist student Mino (Daniel Gélin), the harmoniously portrayed social drama takes another turn. Zampa's film adaptation of Moravia's successful novel of the same name paints a pessimistic panorama of decay full of determined female characters, outshone by an incomparable Lollobrigida. She lends the omnipresent protagonist Adriana an almost indestructible dignity and humanity in the midst of all the decline. (Tom Waibel)
