La ley del deseo
Taboo-breaking, shrill and lustful, Almodóvar tells a thriller melodrama about sexual desire, bizarre family ties, drugs and religion. The love of would-be actor Antonio for star director Pablo, who pines for his absent lover-boy Juan, develops into an obsession - with tragic consequences. The story is complemented by Pablo's transsexual sister Tina - a stunning Carmen Maura - an actress in his films and a warm-hearted mother who carries the trauma of her shattered childhood with her. It is Almodóvar's declaration of love to Madrid under its scorching summer sun, with its devoted people, hot feelings, glowing skin and exuberant passion. An early masterpiece.
