A few months before the end of his term, the staunchly conservative Italian president Mariano De Santis finds himself torn between his religious convictions and the progressive path his adviser—and daughter—Dorotea urges him to take, including the signing of an assisted dying law and several pardons.
As his presidency draws to a close after nearly seven years and six government crises, the devout Catholic jurist is weary of the weight of office. He increasingly leaves day-to-day affairs to his advisers, especially Dorotea (Anna Ferzetti), keeping only a general overview. It is she who presses him, before his resignation, to sign the assisted dying legislation and decide on two clemency requests. Her insistence ultimately compels the apathetic De Santis to confront his own past in order to make his final major decision in office.
