La frontiera (The Border)
The story of two young men from Dalmatia: In the winter of 1916, Emidio (Raoul Bova) decides to desert from the Austro-Hungarian army to fight alongside the Italians. In the summer of 1941, Franco (Marco Leonardi) returns to the island where he was born - and where Emidio grew up. It once belonged to Yugoslavia and is occupied by the Italian army. Franco comes into conflict with Emidio's family, whose story is told to him by Simeone (Omero Antonutti), who views the situation with little hope. (V.M.) Claudio Magris: In this adaptation of Franco Vegliani's novel, Giraldi explores the question of identity as something imposed, while retaining the tenderness, modesty and melancholy of the original. Its calm pace speaks of the challenge of understanding a world in which it is difficult to say or know who you are.
