La Femme du bout du monde
Epstein's last feature film transports the audience to a distant island on the edge of imagination, thus becoming the late culmination of his proven preferences. A cargo ship lands on a deserted island in search of rare mineral resources. In a lonely tavern, the crew discovers a mysterious woman, her psychotic husband and their small child. Soon, the new arrivals fall prey to the woman's enigmatic and magnetic aura, and the unspoken tensions escalate as passion, rivalry and despair threaten to destroy the closed world. With the arrival of a British boat, the situation escalates and a confrontation breaks out. La Femme du bout du monde is reminiscent of Epstein's masterpiece Finis Terrae: the rugged beauty of the Atlantic landscapes meets poetic contemplation. The wild sea is also a metaphor for the unbridled emotions that lead to tragedy. (J.-M.G.)
