District inspector Pokorny is depressed and drinking. He is transferred to the Upper Austrian province: ‘You want to hang yourself. One house like another, and the people who live in them: like the houses, no face; the architect should be arrested.’ In this performance, Qualtinger succeeds in condensing the rebelliousness against the oppressive narrowness of the province with its latent brutality into a personified declaration of war.
