Koyaanisqatsi
An extraordinary documentary about man's intervention in nature - packaged in a unique interplay of image and sound.
In 1982, 5,000 people were left speechless at the premiere of Koyaanisqatsi in a New York concert hall. Never before had the force of man-made environmental destruction been seen in the aesthetic framework of graceful beauty. The atmospheric music by Philip Glass accompanies breathtaking time lapses of cloud flows as well as the slow motion of a threatening rocket launch. It is precisely this simultaneity of destruction and grace that has since given the film cult status as a post-modern documentary epic. And although the film manages entirely without dialogue, it asks so loudly: How do we want to live in the face of the climate crisis if not like this? (Text: Kino und Krawall)
