In 1920, Ernst Lubitsch made a film of the rough farmer's joke with Emil Jannings. The Kohlhiesel landlord has two daughters: the pretty Gretel and the ugly Liesel (both played by Henny Porten). As an old peasant rule dictates that the older daughter must be married first, Xaver makes a pass at Liesel and then divorces her. But Liesel plays a trick on him... Lubitsch transposes ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ to the Bavarian mountains.
