Kismet, Kismet
Restored version
In his debut film, Ismet Elçi tells the semi-autobiographical story of a young Turk who has been living in West Berlin for seven years, dealing in carpets and increasingly arguing with his girlfriend Sabine. Kemal's love of films and cameras, on the other hand, has been undimmed since he first shot 8mm footage in his home village. Projected in the family circle, they interweave as images of his past life with the present. The budding director now invests his savings in the realisation of a personal, socially critical project, for which he trustingly brings Frank on board as a self-appointed producer. Where will fate (Kismet) lead him - to an artistic breakthrough or to financial disaster? (Bianca Jasmina Rauch)
