Uptown girl meets downtown boy: 17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman and her well-off family are on holiday at Kellerman's Hotel. It promises to be extremely stuffy at first - but then she meets the attractive dance teacher and mambo god Johnny Castle. His dance partner drops out and Baby is chosen - much to her father's displeasure - to learn the difficult steps in a short space of time and perform in Johnny's arms ... Although the surprisingly class-conscious film is set in the 1960s, since its release in 1987 there has been no getting away from the unforgettable catchy tune ‘The Time of My Life’, one of the most quoted dance scenes in film history and perhaps the most famous watermelon in the world.
