It is customary for witches to set off in their thirteenth year and spend a year in a foreign city to gain experience, so Kiki sets off too. However, the seriousness of her journey, which she embarks on accompanied by her sharp-tongued black cat Jiji and which, after a rough departure on a broomstick, reveals incredibly beautiful views of the landscape rushing past, only really dawns on Kiki when she finds herself in a city that is clearly too big for her and where she has no friends and no place to stay. With the help of jovial pregnant baker Osono, however, Kiki soon sets up a delivery service based entirely on her one skill - flying on a broomstick. But one day, this very skill seems to desert her.

Based on a children's book by Eiko Kadono, "Kiki's Little Delivery Service" is an enchanting and sometimes melancholy story about the trials and tribulations of venturing out into the big wide world on your own - in short, a film about growing up.
