Kafka (Episode 1 & 3)
Who was Kafka? An outstanding writer, a pioneer of literary modernism, that's what the canon says. But what about Franz Kafka the man? How did the creator of some of the most iconic texts of the 20th century speak, feel and love? His personality was as multi-layered and open to the most diverse interpretations as his work. An erratic personality that still poses riddles on the 100th anniversary of Kafka's death. Or to put it another way: it invites creative interpretation and an answer to the question of who Kafka is today.
In six episodes, David Schalko tells Kafka's life from different perspectives in an innovative visual language, multi-layered and touching. In the Directors Screening, Kafka's life is shown from the perspective of his friend, the writer Max Brod (Episode 1), and from the perspective of his authoritative father (Episode 3). Each episode is self-contained, so that the stories can be enjoyed without knowledge of the other episodes.
