JOHATSU – INTO THIN AIR

In Japan, around 100,000 people disappear every year, some of them with the help of night moving companies. Some are fleeing unhappy relationships, others cannot bear the enormous social pressure, while still others are trying to escape criminal entanglements. With ‘JOHATSU’ (蒸発 - ‘evaporate’), Arata Mori and Andreas Hartmann embark on an emotional quest: those who have stayed behind, helpers and those who have gone into hiding face a variety of challenges. A new beginning usually begins in isolation, and the question of one's own identity becomes urgent. The directing duo not only look behind the scenes of this obscure practice of disappearance, but also delve deep into human nature.
