Jobcenter

FromAngela Summereder

Year2009

Duration80min.

LanguageGerman

The task and goal of a job centre is to make people (once again) ‘fit’ for the labour market. In this documentary film, Angela Summereder observes five people from different social classes who use the services of such a centre. They discuss CVs, work out pyramids of needs and rehearse job interviews. While much of the coursework is geared towards optimisation, Summereder also accompanies her protagonists outside of the classroom. This reflection highlights the difference between statistics and individuals, between institutions and practice. In addition, JOBCENTER is, in a sense, also a portrait of a region that was economically prosperous not so long ago, where former myths of progress have now been overtaken by reality.
