Jeder schreibt für sich allein
Numerous writers turned their backs on Nazi Germany after 1933. But what about those who stayed? Either in the hope of somehow coming to terms with the regime, or who even sympathised with it? Inspired by Anatol Regnier's book of the same name, the film follows in the footsteps of these authors - from Gottfried Benn to Erich Kästner and Hans Fallada - and reflects on the complex relationship between autonomy and adaptation. What inner and outer contradictions provoked life and work under the regime? How did the next generation deal with the actions and positions of their fathers? What does this teach us about the present, which may have reached a turning point again? And above all: How sure can a person be of themselves?
