It’s a Wonderful Life
Part of the special series JOLLY SEASON
George Bailey has not achieved any of his major life goals. His original plan was to travel the world, but his father's stroke forced him into the position of managing director of his father's company, even though he would have loved to leave it behind. A few years later, he is married and has four children, but he still hasn't been able to achieve any of the goals he set himself. When $8,000 disappears from the company's coffers at Christmas of all times, he wants to put an end to his life. Bailey sees no way out and is now facing prison for embezzlement. The most influential man in town, Mr Potter, doesn't want to help him, but instead wants to deliver George to the knife. But his family and friends have not forgotten him. In answer to their prayers, the angel Clarence, who has yet to earn his wings, is sent down to prevent George's suicide ...
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Actor and Best Film, but lost in every category. Since then, however, the film has been regarded as a classic, especially thanks to the annual US television broadcasts in December.
Fun fact: Until this film, snow was always recreated with white-painted cornflakes. As Frank Capra wanted to use the original sound, a new snow effect was developed. A mixture was created using water, soap and a fire-retardant substance, which was then blown through a wind machine - film snow is still produced in this way today.
