Italian End of Days
The good news: Double features are back! The bad news: Humanity is rapidly going downhill. Contrary to what one might expect, the rip-off of Ridley Scott's surprise hit, cheekily titled ALIEN 2 in its original version, doesn't take us to distant galaxies, but rather underground to a stalactite cave, where a nasty creature is hunting a group of scientists. What directorial newcomer Ciro Ippolito lacks in budget and suspense, he makes up for with bizarre ideas – including an apocalyptic finale.
What the day after the end might look like is what veteran director Sergio Martino, also inspired by major American films, dreams up in his straightforward and fast-paced dystopia, in which the last survivors of a nuclear war seek their future and salvation in a spaceship – in space, of course.
