Isle of the Dead

FromMARK ROBSON

WithBORIS KARLOFF, ELLEN DREW, HELENE THIMIG, JASON ROBARDS SR u.a.

Year1945

Duration72min.

Boris Karloff puts the monster outfits in the wardrobe and slips into the role of a Greek general who, together with an American journalist, ends up on the island of death in 1912, which has - appropriately enough - been quarantined due to a plague epidemic. There, the two meet a Swiss archaeologist and his strange entourage - above all the mysterious housekeeper Madame Kyra, who senses the presence of an ancient female demon lurking in the darkness. First an oppressive chamber play, then an atmospheric phantasmagoria: Val Lewton, the ‘master of shadows’, proves once again why it is more effective to only hint at the horror rather than show it explicitly. Not for nothing one of Martin Scorsese's favourite horror films. (Florian Widegger)
