In the Mouth of Madness
Just before the publication of his new novel, In the Mouth of Madness, successful horror author Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow) disappears without a trace, causing a worldwide sensation. Insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) is assigned to the case and soon finds himself confronted with the unbelievable: Having just escaped from a deranged axe murderer, he makes his way to the idyllic village of Hobb's End, which serves as the setting for Cane's works. There, the author himself announces that his fiction is now becoming reality through the power of mass consumption... The spirit of H. P. Lovecraft's supernatural visions of horror runs through Carpenter's work (like the tentacles of The Thing), and with In the Mouth of Madness he has created a masterpiece of Lovecraftian cinema: a pop culture Pirandello-esque paraphrase about the insane apocalypse in the era of media manipulation. ‘Reality ain't what it used to be.’ (C.H.)
