Il secondo tragico Fantozzi (Fantozzi 2)

FromLuciano Salce

WithPaolo Villaggio, Anna Mazzamauro, Gigi Reder, Giuseppe Anatrelli, Liù Bosisio, Ugo Bologna, Mauro Vestri, Plinio Fernando

Year1976

Duration110min.

After the enormous success of the first *Fantozzi* film, director Luciano Salce and writer-lead actor Paolo Villaggio immediately set to work on a sequel, which would be followed by eight more installments by 1999, albeit without Salce’s involvement. *The New Adventures of Fantozzi* works perfectly well without prior knowledge of the first film and is in no way inferior to Salce’s original. The sequel might even be a bit sharper in its satirical critique of the institutionalized alienation culture of the capitalist workplace: the hapless accountant Fantozzi curries favor with his superiors while dishing out as much as he is forced to endure. Among the brilliant episodes of the second installment, one stands out as tailor-made for film enthusiasts (and the Film Museum): a professor with a taste for avant-garde and heavy cinema repeatedly forces Fantozzi and his fellow underlings to watch *Battleship Kotiomkin* (*Potemkin*). The revolution isn’t far behind. (Christoph Huber)
