Il federale (Zwei in einem Stiefel)

FromLuciano Salce

WithUgo Tognazzi, Georges Wilson, Gianrico Tedeschi, Elsa Vazzoler u.a.

Year1961

Duration102min.

Primo Arcovazzi (Ugo Tognazzi) is a fascist with heart and soul - but without any rank to speak of. A small assignment is supposed to change that: If he brings a notorious anti-fascist and intellectual to Rome ‘for further treatment’, he will be made provincial secretary (federale). Of course, the whole thing degenerates into an odyssey - by motorbike, floating car, tandem and other often unruly vehicles, including a car stop. That takes time. When the disparate but stubbornly likeable team reaches the capital, there are a disturbing number of English-speaking soldiers running around. Salce's vulgar, anarchic comedy about the end of the war caused a great deal of discussion, as it has a multi-faceted fascist as its main character whose feelings and ideals are comprehensible. The duo dynamic at the centre and Ennio Morricone's music also make the film the prototype for many Italian revolutionary westerns. (O.M.)
