Il deserto rosso

Giuliana suffers from anxiety after a car accident. She becomes more and more estranged from her husband and her son. At the same time, she perceives the industrialised environment as a threat. Factories and refineries turn into apocalyptic visions of decay.

Michelangelo Antonioni's first colour film depicts the psychological crisis of its heroine with sophisticated, deliberately unreal colour dramaturgy. IL DESERTO ROSSO is also one of the first films to deal with the consequences of industrialisation and environmental pollution in the mid-1960s.
