To paraphrase a title by Dickens, IHRE VERGANGENHEIT (Her Past) could be called a ‘story in three cities,’ as the film is set in London, Paris and Vienna. In the frame story, a woman from a London homeless shelter tells the uninspired novelist James Hamilton Paget about her life in the garden of his elegant villa. HER PAST tells of the undeserved social decline and years of grief of a once happy wife and mother from a higher social class. After a distinguished life full of admirers in Paris, she fell into dubious company and ended up in prison. ‘What else can I expect in this world but misery and suffering?’ While the answer is not very uplifting for the woman, the writer wins a competition with her story ...
