Idioterne (Idioten)
A group of adults who have retreated to a house in the Danish countryside pretend to have intellectual disabilities—a game intended as an attempt to shed social masks. *IDIOTERNE* is a Dogma film in the most radical sense: raw, unguarded, without safeguards. It forces us to question shame, voyeurism, and moral superiority. Who is looking down on whom here—and why? Von Trier refuses to take any clear stance and mercilessly shifts the responsibility onto the audience: “I come from a time when, at least in Denmark, provocation was generally seen as a good thing. Because it triggers a thought process. You look at things in a new way. That might make you angry, or maybe you’ll feel great. But something gets set in motion.”
