“Long, long ago, when people still believed in witches ...” is how this fairytale screwball comedy begins. Centuries later, a lightning strike frees the spirits of a wizard and his daughter trapped in an oak tree, who once ended up at the stake. Now they want to take revenge on the descendants of their tormentor, but no sooner has Jennifer taken on human form than love gets in the way. I MARRIED A WITCH, which was released in Austrian cinemas at Christmas 1945, redeemed the claim to re-education by making us forget the troublesome present. “Quite the ‘material’ on which René Clair can unfold his ironic mastery”, Otto F. Beer happily agreed in the Salzburger Nachrichten. “The witty humor triggered liberating laughter.” (Michael Omasta)
