Charles Bonnet has achieved wealth and fame as an art lover and owner of the most valuable masterpieces. The Parisian hides only one tiny detail from the international art scene: he paints the famous works himself. The extremely agile and highly talented forger repeatedly drives his daughter Nicole to despair with his secret passion. She tries in vain to stop her headstrong father from landing his latest coup: To give the “Cellini Venus” - which in reality Nicole's grandfather sculpted in her grandmother's likeness - to a Paris museum on loan for an international exhibition.

When the valuable piece is to be insured for a million dollars, Bonnet's swindle threatens to be exposed, as a Swiss expert has been commissioned to check the originality of the Venus. Nicole, who wants to save her father from embarrassment at all costs, asks the unusually charming detective and burglar Simon Dermott for help.
