How to be Normal
Freshly released from a psychiatric ward, Pia, who is in her mid-twenties, moves back into her parents' house and realizes that a state of emergency prevails there too. Between job insecurity, lovesickness, medication and the constant pressure to function, she searches for stability in a world that feels increasingly alien. Her parents, Elfie and Klaus, also try to keep up - and, like Pia, stumble over their own breaking points. But slowly a transformation sets in - into something uncontrollable, perhaps dangerous. Or into something that can save what can still be saved. In his powerful feature film debut about psychological crises and family dynamics, Florian Pochlatko deals with the question of all questions: Who actually determines what is “normal”?
