In a remote mountain region, Belli and her somewhat younger, deaf-mute brother try to break out of the close ties of family and farm. The fated union of the two, which finds its culmination in an act of sibling love, gives birth to a child. When the father learns of this, he plunges the family into a tragedy of classic proportions.
