Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti
Entertainment cinema with an alienating effect: if Mr Puntila drinks too much alcohol, he becomes ‘a good man and sees white mice’, says his servant, with whom he then regularly fraternises ... Brecht could only gain little from this film adaptation, which was made shortly before his death - but the interplay between Bois as a drunkard and Engelmann as a shirt-sleeved representative of the working class, as well as Hanns Eisler's musical score, are worth discovering.
