Henry V
England, 1415. In the name of Edward III, the young Norman king Henry V asserts his claim to the French throne and crosses over to the mainland with an army. The weak French king hesitates for a long time before confronting the victorious English. When disease and lack of supplies weaken the army, Henry wants to retreat to Calais. At Azincourt, he faces a superior French force. Before the battle, however, the king is able to motivate his men to such an extent that the English defeat their opponents decisively.
Based on Shakespeare's most significant historical drama, Laurence Olivier, as lead actor, director and screenwriter, created what many consider his highest-rated Shakespeare film adaptation with HENRY V. It is also significant in terms of contemporary history: filmed during the Second World War, the victory story of Henry V was used to strengthen the national pride of the British troops.
