Cabo Verde is a land of emigration: around half of all Cabo Verdeans live in the diaspora. Denise Fernandes' feature film debut uses aesthetically pleasing tableaux to tell the story of Nana, a girl whose life is also characterised by moving away - her mother has left the island state. When Nana, who nevertheless grows up well cared for, develops mysterious health problems, the volcanic landscape also becomes the protagonist - and the setting for dreamlike encounters that unwittingly prepare Nana for an important decision.
