Gruber&Turnheim vertonen: BUSTER KEATON – DER GENERAL
The 1926 American comedy written by and starring the great Buster Keaton has been considered one of the best films and comedies of all time for decades. On this evening, THE GENERAL will be accompanied by silent film narrator Ralph Turnheim and silent film pianist Gerhard Gruber. Live, lyrical and Viennese.
THE GENERAL
Keaton plays Johnnie, a locomotive engineer during the American Civil War who sets out alone in pursuit of his locomotive, General, which has been hijacked by spies, first on foot, then by handcar, and finally with another locomotive. He defies all the obstacles the spies put in his way. Famous is the scene in which a fire-damaged bridge collapses under the weight of the locomotive. With ingenuity, Johnnie manages to recapture both his machine and the favour of his beloved girl Annabelle Lee.
It was only after its rediscovery in the 1950s that the film was recognised as a masterpiece. At its premiere, the film flopped with audiences and critics and was also one of the most expensive comedies of the silent film era. Ralph Turnheim will tell you more about this after the screening.
