Grbavica

Esma lives with her 12-year-old daughter Sara in Grbavica, a neighbourhood in war-torn Sarajevo. While the teenager's emotions run up and down as she searches for her identity, Esma continues to live with the repression of her past. She is confronted with the challenge of keeping herself and her daughter afloat in a war-torn environment. Director and screenwriter Jasmila Žbanić (QUO VADIS, AIDA?) grew up in Sarajevo herself and has repeatedly devoted herself to filming the reality of life in her home country. In her feature film debut, she addresses the effects of sexualised violence and war trauma in general on life after the war. An important perspective on Bosnia in the 2000s, captivatingly told.
