Gold
Canada, 1898, the height of the gold rush. A small group of German emigrants sets off for the gold fields on the Klondike River with horses, covered wagons, roasted onion powder, a camera and a banjo, hoping for a better life. Among them is Emily Meyer (Nina Hoss), a single woman. The wilderness grows denser, disorientation increases, complications arise (broken wheels, bear traps), exhaustion and conflicts set in. But even when the trek is already severely depleted, Emily does not turn back. Based on testimonies from that time, Arslan tells a historical story for the first time – in the form of a late Western. Accompanied by rough guitar riffs and interrupted by fade-outs, he focuses on the monotony and repetitiveness of the gruelling journey and the barrenness of the landscape. However, there is also a standard situation for the genre: the showdown. (B.K.)
