For millions of years, Seatopia, a thriving underwater civilisation, has lived in relative peace under the rule of Emperor Antonio. Its inhabitants live in huge cities reminiscent of Rome and ancient Greece. But nuclear tests on the surface have severely damaged their cities due to the resulting earthquakes. The Seatopians therefore send the beetle-like god of their civilisation, Megalon, to destroy the surface world in revenge. A decisive battle ensues between Godzilla, who can count on the help of the human robot Jet Jaguar, and Megalon and the alien monster Gigan.

The 13th film in the Godzilla series enjoyed its greatest success in the USA in particular, where it was released three years late and became one of the best-known monster films. The American distributor decided to release the film because it saw Godzilla as a real heroic figure at the time. It also felt that the time was right to show children one thing: Even a friendly monster can be a hero - not just Superman.
