Maximus (Russell Crowe), victorious general of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), was supposed to be his successor. But then the ruler dies unexpectedly and his son Commodus (strong: Joaquin Phoenix) takes power. He has Maximus arrested and sentences him to death because he fears him as an adversary. However, Maximus manages to escape. When he returns home after a long journey, he discovers that Commodus has had his family killed. The emperor's henchmen capture Maximus and sell him on the slave market. There, the outcast is trained as a gladiator and returns to Rome to take his revenge...
