A documentary homage to the Resistenza, made shortly after the end of the war. Actions of resistance against Italian fascists and Nazi occupiers between autumn 1943 and spring 1945. Reactions to the murder of 333 civilians in March 1944 as revenge for an attack in which 33 SS men were killed in Rome: German thoroughness on a scale of one to ten. Marcello Pagliero's episode deals with the exhumation of the bodies in the Ardeatine Caves. Luchino Visconti films with eight cameras the trial of the Roman police chief Pietro Caruso, who procured the hostages for the Germans. During the trial, which ends with the death sentence and execution of the police chief, the prosecution witness, Donato Carretta, is recognised by the angry crowd as the former director of the Regina Coeli prison and lynched. (H.T.) Before that, a rare Visconti film of uncanny mastery: a short study of the scene of a crime.
