On 6 December 1969, at the end of their US tour, the Rolling Stones and several other bands (including the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane) gave a free concert in front of 300,000 spectators at the Altamont Speedway. What was intended as a utopian counterpoint to the commercialised rock business turned into a disaster: while the group was playing ‘Under My Thumb,’ a member of the Hells Angels, who were acting as security guards, stabbed 18-year-old black man Meredith Hunter to death. It was one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of rock music, often referred to as the death of the ‘love and peace’ era.

‘One of the best rock documentaries ever! The Rolling Stones in their prime ... the directors managed to capture the essence of '60s idealism—and its shocking collapse.’
(Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York)
