In 2176, a police team is sent to pick up a murderous robber from the Mars colony. But they find a ghost town: an alien force has turned the inhabitants into killer zombies. As in Assault on Precinct 13, criminals (Ice Cube) and police officers (strongest in the team: Natasha Henstridge) are forced to work together to fight the mob that has gone wild. An underrated late work that combines thematic and stylistic preferences: minimalist plot and stirring widescreen images in a strangely dreamlike flashback narrative. In contrast, tension is built up through the masterful control of space (the shift between inside and outside is a matter of life and death). The anachronistic 1980s design (ghost zombies in KISS make-up) reminds us that the red marsh hell is only the apocalyptic end point of the capitalist desert that has been worsening since Reaganomics (and They Live).
